I first heard the word "vegemite" about 20 years ago in the song, "Down Under" by the group, Men at Work.  I didn't know what vegemite was but it sounded delicious.  When I got to Australia, I learned otherwise.  As I learned here, it smells like yeast, looks like tar and tastes like salt.  A few weeks later, an Aussie friend suggested that I spread it very thinly (doh!)  When applied correctly, it's actually not too bad.  But it's still, let's say, an acquired taste.
