The Stuart Highway runs north-south through the center of Australia and is the only paved road within about a thousand miles on either side of it. I was now entering the real Australian Outback. Standing here by this sign, and staring into the great beyond, I honestly felt like I'd reached the end of civilization and life as I knew it. As it turned out, in some ways I was right.
