44).  West Coast of New Zealand    Near Hokitika, New Zealand (February 2002)

This highway is on the west coast of the South Island and, like many highways in New Zealand, it's enshrouded with ferns.  You see ferns just about everywhere in the lush country of New Zealand.  There are lots of narrow, winding highways in New Zealand like this, so it's hard to travel very far in one day.  But in general the road system is well maintained.
