36). Volcanic White Island Bay of Plenty, New Zealand (December 2001)
After leaving the Cook Islands, I arrived in New Zealand where I spent the next two months. Probably the most incredible place
I visited in New Zealand was White Island, a giant volcanic crater that sits about 20 miles offshore. The tour was fascinating but after
spending an hour on the island, I could taste a sulfuric crust building up on my lips.
While it's an amazing place, I don't think I'd want to be a tour guide here.
