The most amazing experience of my 2001 trip around America occurred in the small town of Wing, North Dakota. I met
an 87-year old woman there named Hester Bailey who, as I learned, was my grandmother's kindergarten pupil in 1921.
Hester (left) not only remembered my grandmother and mother, but she's probably the only person alive who remembers my great-grandparents, all of
whom are long gone. Hester is delightfully spry and we still keep in touch. In fact, she recently sent me a huge colorful quilt
that she made, along with some handmade potholders.
